15. Oberammergau, Germany

Home of the world's longest running Passion Play, first performed in 1634 and now held every 10 years. The production involves over 2,500 locals, half the village's population.

14. Anjar, Lebanon

Lebanon's name comes from the Arabic word for yoghurt, due to its resemblance to snow which mountainous Lebanon has in abundance. Also plentiful are snow globes - almost every city, town and monastery has their own. As of 2012, Beirut's National Museum had possibly the best selection (including the above), whilst a souvenir shop on Hamra Street stocked some other rare ones.🔮

13. New York, United States

The United Nations headquarters, located in New York, was built in 1952 on the site of a former abattoir. The UN issues its own stamps, and visitors can have their photo taken and made into unique stamps valid for international postage. The gift shop also sells flags from all 193 member states.

12. York, United Kingdom

Home of the largest Viking archaeological site in Britain, now the Jorvik Viking Centre. York was the capital of Northumbria until 954, the last independent kingdom to succumb to English unification. Northumbria was ruled by Vikings for the last 80 years of its existence, the longest uninterrupted period of Viking rule in England.

11. Andorra

The only country to have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest without ever qualifying from the semi-finals. Their début entry, selected in a national contest called 12 Punts (12 Points - the highest score a song can receive from each country), received a grand total of 12 points, all from Spain.

10. Niagara Falls, Canada

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls on the Canada-US border, the largest of which, Horseshoe Falls, is in Canada. Horseshoe Falls has been the site of all attempts to descend the falls inside a barrel, a feat first performed by Annie Edson Taylor in 1901, who started out on the US side but was carried across the border by currents. She was 63 years old at the time.

9. Moscow, Russia

In the 1990s Moscow was home to the world's largest McDonald's. It was later surpassed by a bigger one in Orlando, which was torn down earlier this year to make way for an even bigger McDonald's.

8. Cuba

One of Cuba's lesser-known attractions is the Palacio de Valle in Cienfuegos, an ornate Moorish-style mansion and model for the presidential palace in video game Tropico. Formerly a casino, it now operates as a restaurant, bar and souvenir shop. It can be reached by taxi from Havana (about 3 hours away) for around 120 USD.

7. Krimml, Austria

Home of the country's highest waterfall. It was the filming location for Snow White Falls in NBC’s The 10th Kingdom. The surrounding forest contains 327 species of moss. Some species of moss can absorb up to 20 times their weight in liquid. Fortunately they have not yet absorbed the falls.

5. Hawaii, United States

For most of the 20th century, Hawaii was the world's largest exporter of pineapples. Today only one major plantation still operates, the Dole Plantation on the island of Oahu, home of the world's largest maze. The maze is shaped like a pineapple. 🍍

4. Český Krumlov, Czech Republic

A country known by many names... Czech Republic, Czechia, Chechnya... most derived from "Čechy", meaning Bohemia, the country's largest region. Český Krumlov, whose name means "Bohemian Krumlov" to distinguish it from another Krumlov, has the second-largest castle complex in the country, after Prague Castle, the largest in the world.

3. Taipei, Taiwan

Taiwan is the world's largest sovereign state outside the UN. Officially called the Republic of China, the island separated unamicably from the similarly-named-but-different People's Republic of China in 1945, and both governments still claim possession of each other's territories. Due to mainland China's more considerable influence, only 22 countries recognise Taiwan, the largest of which is Burkina Faso.

1. Bogotá, Colombia

Inside is the Muisca Raft (Balsa Muisca), a pre-Columbian object displayed at the Gold Museum. The Muisca are the original inhabitants of Bogotá. In Muisca culture the zipa (chief) would ceremonially dive off a raft, covered head to toe in gold dust as an offering to the gods. This ritual inspired the legend of El Dorado, which in turn gave its name to Bogotá's airport, El Dorado International.
