12. York, United Kingdom

Home of the largest Viking archaeological site in Britain, now the Jorvik Viking Centre. York was the capital of Northumbria until 954, the last independent kingdom to succumb to English unification. Northumbria was ruled by Vikings for the last 80 years of its existence, the longest uninterrupted period of Viking rule in England.
